About Flevoland

Accommodation at the bottom of the sea

Flevoland is the youngest province of the Netherlands. The province was established in 1986 and was created by reclaiming the former Zuiderzee. In 1918 the Zuiderzee Act was passed, when it was decided to reclaim the land from the sea. This took almost three quarters of a century. The name Flevoland is derived from Lake Flevo (Flevomeer). Due to the slow rising of the sea level in the Zuiderzee area, gradually a number of lakes appeared of which Lake Flevo was one. At the start of our age these lakes became joined together and formed the Zuiderzee.

The province is characterised by its wide, open spaces and straight lines and sharp contrasts. It consists of two parts: the Noordoostpolder (North-East Polder), which is a continuation of the mainland, and the Flevopolder, the largest artificial island in the world. The new polders were primarily given an agricultural destination. The province is at an average of approximately five metres below sea level. Its favourable central location makes it a superb “home base” to discover the Netherlands. Major cities such as Amsterdam, Utrecht and Groningen are within easy reach.
